Help us find a cure for blood cancers through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2007 Man & Woman of the Year

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society wants you to celebrate your ability to help others. We are seeking highly-motivated candidates to compete for the titles of 2007 Man & Woman of the Year for Virginia. The fundraising competition kicks off March 22^nd at The Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, and lasts for eight weeks. The monies raised are used to fund research seeking cures and better therapies, and to provide information and support so that patients have the best possible outcomes throughout their cancer experience. Many states participate in this national competition. The winners from each state and overall winners are named in a full-page ad in USA Today.

Founded in 1949, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the fastest growing, non-profit voluntary health organization with a nationwide presence. The Virginia Chapter is one of 66 chapters in the U.S. and Canada. Our mission is to cure blood cancers-- leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma-- and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. To date, the Society has provided more than $486 million in research grants targeting blood cancers, and has supported more than 2.5 million blood cancer patients, family members and healthcare professionals.

We have come far since the 1940s when almost no one survived a blood cancer. Our commitment to research has contributed to an unprecedented rise in survival rates for some blood cancers. The approximate five-year survival rate for people with leukemia, for example, has tripled in the past 40 years. Hodgkin lymphoma is now considered one of the most curable forms of cancer.

But consider these facts:

More than 785,829 Americans are battling a blood cancer.
Every five minutes, someone new is diagnosed.
Every 10 minutes, someone dies.
Leukemia affects more young people under 20 than any other form of cancer, and strikes nine times as many adults as children.
It takes an average of 7-10 years to develop just one new drug, and costs an estimated $500-$800 million for one successful drug development program.
Many blood cancer patients have monthly costs ranging from $4,000-$6,000 for essential drugs to help maintain a good quality of life.

Candidates raise money to help the Society improve these statistics. They compete in honor of a Boy & Girl of the Year, local children who are survivors of blood cancers and who are sources of inspiration. Harrison Strickler, for example, was diagnosed with high risk acute lymphocytic leukemia when he was six. He is now nine, and has been off treatment for more than six months, and he is full of life. Emma McFeely was diagnosed at 10 weeks old, and is now a thriving seven-year old.

Past candidates often say that the experience of helping others in such a significant way has changed their life. The competition is a great way for candidates to network with their peers while assisting the Society to bring help and hope to thousands of blood cancer patients. It has been proven that busy professionals (realtors, insurance agents, lawyers, CEOs, etc.) are the most successful at the competition. They can form campaign teams, get sponsorships and even use a website we provide to receive donations. Candidates also receive local recognition for their efforts.

After eight weeks of competition the candidates, their guests and other prominent community members come together at a Grand Finale Celebration and enjoy music, food and an auction. The winners are announced.
